Punjab is supplying abohar kinnow for midday meals

Punjab Agro has started regularly buying kinnow from farmers to supply government and government-aided schools in various districts. This is in response to the Punjab Government’s decision to include kinnow in the midday meal for students as part of their support for kinnow-producing farmers.

Deputy Commissioner Senu Duggal said that kinnow was sent from here on Monday to the schools in the districts of Ferozepur, Faridkot, Kapurthala, Barnala, Tarn Taran, and Amritsar during a visit to the Punjab Agro facility in Alamgarh village, which is five kilometers from Abohar. Kinnow was also delivered to the schools in the districts of Ludhiana, Jalandhar, Fatehgarh Sahib, Pathankot, and SBS Nagar on Tuesday and given to the pupils that same day. She said that by creating several zones around the state, kinnow is regularly delivered to various locations.

According to Gurpreet Singh, a Punjab Agro officer, they often buy kinnow from farmers. The purpose of the acquisition is to enable the farmers to profit from their harvests.

Farmers in Daulatpura village, including Gurdev Singh, claimed they sold their goods to Punjab Agro for Rs 15 per kg, while they were receiving less in the private market. “We appreciate the government’s directive to district authorities around the state to provide kinnow to children as part of their midday meal at least once a week. In order to stop private players from abusing farmers in the future, legislative decisions must be made, according to Gurdev.
