Rahul Gandhi and Ladakh’s independent MP, Muhammad Haneefa, meet in Delhi

In the nation’s capital on Tuesday, Independent MP from Ladakh Mohmad Haneefa and a few local leaders visited Congress MP Rahul Gandhi, generating speculation over the latter’s possible support for the Congress-led India alliance.

Although he hasn’t made a formal declaration to that effect yet, there are many rumors that he is endorsing the India bloc.

Notably, Independent MP Vishal Patil of Maharashtra’s Sangli seat vowed his support for the Congress party barely two days after the election results were announced.

Before declaring support for the coalition formed by the opposition, he had met with Rahul Gandhi and the party president, Mallikarjun Kharge.

By stealing this seat from the BJP, Mohmad Haneefa, an independent who ran in the Lok Sabha elections from the Ladakh Union Territory, inflicted a blow to the party.

Rebel National Conference (NC) leader Mohmad Haneefa easily beat Congressman Tsering Namgyal and BJP candidate Tashi Gyalson.

Haneefa secured 65,259 of the 1.35 lakh votes cast in Ladakh, while the BJP and Congress secured 31,956 and 37,397 votes, respectively.

The Ladakh MP told a magazine a few days ago that the people in the region’s top demands were statehood and Sixth Schedule status, and that he had not yet decided whether to support any party or coalition at the Centre. He would make that decision after speaking with all parties involved in the Union Territory.

Following the results of the June 4 election, the Congress-led INDIA bloc achieved its highest result with 99 seats in the past three Lok Sabha elections in 2014, 2019, and 2024, while the BJP-led National Democratic Alliance (NDA) established its third straight government under the direction of Prime Minister Modi.
