Residents of North Delhi return home as the Yamuna retreats

People from North Delhi who had fled when the Yamuna overflowed and destroyed their homes and businesses have started to trickle back in now that the river is receding and there hasn’t been much rain in the city in recent days.

A few came back to check on their stores at the monastery market at Kashmiri Gate, which was submerged during the previous week’s rain, forcing locals to relocate to relief camps and leaving the market completely covered in sludge and flotsam.

Due to the unprecedented inundation, the government was compelled to call in the navy to assist in clearing the ITO Barrage’s clogged gates. Four of the 32 gates of the barrage were remained clogged on Friday, despite the navy’s efforts to unlock one of them. Yamuna’s water level was 205.98 meters on Sunday, down from a height of 208.66 meters at 8 o’clock on Thursday.

On Saturday, there were hints that the water level in Yamuna was going down, but the comfort was just temporary since late-afternoon rains further flooded many highways. The national capital is expected to have mild to moderate rain on Sunday, according to the meteorological service.
