SC gives big relief to former DGP Saini in the case of junior engineer murder, ban on arrest

New Delhi. The Supreme Court granted interim protection to former Punjab Director General of Police Sumegh Singh Saini from arrest on Tuesday in 1991 in the alleged murder of Balwant Singh Multani, a junior engineer. A bench of Justices Ashok Bhushan, Justice R Subhash Reddy and Justice MR Shah sought a response from the Punjab government on Saini's appeal . Saini has challenged the Punjab and Haryana High Court order denying him anticipatory bail in the case. During the hearing of the case through video conference, the bench sought to know from senior advocate Siddharth Luthra, appearing for the Punjab government, what was the hurry to arrest Saini in the 29-year-old case.

Luthra replied that the former Director General of Police with 'Z' category security is absconding. The bench listed the matter for hearing after four weeks and said that Saini will not be arrested till further orders and he will cooperate in the investigation. On September 8, the High Court dismissed two petitions, including Saini's anticipatory bail plea, in the alleged murder case.
