School Heads Are Invited to Camps by the West Bengal High School Council to Discuss the Features of the Semester-based System

The West Bengal Council of Higher Secondary Education announced on Wednesday that it would be holding camps to acquaint headmasters and principals with the features of the system and evaluation strategies, subsequent to the implementation of a semester-based education system at the plus two level in educational institutions throughout the state. In a letter to the headmaster and principals, Council President Chiranjib Bhattacharya emphasized the value of attending these sessions. The workshops for the city’s schools are slated for May 16 for north Kolkata and May 17 for south Kolkata. From May 18 to June 19, similar camps will be hosted across the remainder of the state, including the Darjeeling area.

The council had earlier declared that all state-run and state-aided schools will adopt the semester system for classes 11 and 12, with implementation starting in the academic year 2024–2025 for classes 11 and 2025–2026 for classes 12. The 10+2 course is divided into four sections under the new system: semesters 1, 2, 3, and 4. Class 11 has been reorganized as semesters 1 and 2, and class 12 as semesters 3 and 4. In addition, the council urged schools to support and provide pupils with the chance to take on difficult schoolwork, participate in extracurricular activities, and work on summer projects with universities.

Board examinations are scheduled to take place after the conclusion of the third and fourth semesters, according to the draft of the new state education policy that was released in August of last year. An official from the higher secondary department said that the current 4+4+2+2 system, in which pupils spend four years in the foundation stage, four years in upper primary (the preparatory stage), and two years (classes 9 and 10) in secondary school, would remain in place.
