Semicon India 2023: PM Modi Announces Plan for 300 Colleges to Offer Courses in Semiconductors
On July 28, Gujarat’s Mahatma Mandir hosted the Semicon India 2023 conference, which was officially opened by Prime Minister Narendra Modi. He described India as the region’s next semiconductor powerhouse at the occasion. PM Modi emphasized the need of rewriting the engineering curriculum and fostering a strong semiconductor ecosystem in order to achieve this aim.
Prime Minister Narendra Modi said that more than 300 prestigious universities in India have been picked as part of this effort and would provide specialized courses on semiconductors. The country’s semiconductor sector is predicted to expand and flourish greatly as a result of this decision.
According to estimates, our nation will create more than 1 lakh design engineers over the course of the next five years. The semiconductor industry would also be strengthened by India’s expanding start-up ecosystem, he said.
For far too long, the world has placed a great deal of reliance on Chinese chips. However, India hopes that by launching this project, it would not only be able to cover its own needs for semiconductors but also become a potential market leader. It is believed that this action would mark a significant turning point in both Indian history and world history. It is anticipated to have a considerable positive impact on the “Make in India” initiative and the global semiconductor market.
According to Dr. Prabu Raja, President of the Semiconductor Product Group at Applied Materials, India is poised to play a key role in the global semiconductor sector because to Prime Minister Modi’s clear vision.
“India’s moment to shine is now, in our opinion. No organization or nation can deal with the issues in the sector on its own. In this industry, it’s time for cooperative alliances. We may be able to act as catalysts in the industry thanks to this new collaborative paradigm, he said.
‘Catalysing India’s Semiconductor Ecosystem’ was the focus of this conference, which served as a showcase for India’s semiconductor strategy and policies. Making India a hub for semiconductor design, manufacture, and technological advancement is the objective of this event.
At the occasion, several business luminaries shared their ideas. Ajit Minocha, President and CEO of SEMI, referred to the project as a significant turning point in India’s history. He said that India’s entry into the semiconductor manufacturing industry is made possible by a favorable combination of geopolitics, domestic politics, and private sector capabilities. Additionally, he applauded Micron for its historic investment in India, which is expected to open the way for other businesses to follow.
