TDP will not run in the Telangana Lok Sabha elections

The Telugu Desam Party, which is a component of the NDA in neighboring Andhra Pradesh, has opted not to run in the next Lok Sabha elections in Telangana. The party, which is now facing several challenges, has not yet determined whom to endorse in the state.

However, Jyothsna Tirunagari, a spokeswoman for the TDP, said that the party would continue its political career by running in the local body elections, which are scheduled for June or July of this year.

“We are not running in the Telangana Lok Sabha elections, despite being a member of the NDA.The top leadership of the party will decide whom to back in the next Telangana elections. There aren’t any instructions on it as of yet,” she informed PTI.

The last several years have been difficult for the TDP politically, and things became worse when Andhra Pradesh police detained TDP leader N Chandrababu Naidu in connection with a fraud investigation.

After his detention, the party chose not to run in the Telangana assembly elections, which were conducted on November 30 of last year. As a result, Ksanai Gnaneswar, the state president of the party, left the TDP and joined the Bharat Rashtra Samithi (BRS), which is headed by former chief minister K Chandrasekahr Rao, before to the elections.

Since then, there have been several leaders and cadres who have deserted the Telangana party, leaving it without a leader. With 3.51% of the vote, the TDP was able to secure two seats in Telangana at the 2018 Assembly elections. It then had a pre-poll agreement with the CPI and Congress.

Other parties courted the TDP’s leaders and took its share of the votes in the Assembly elections since the party did not challenge the polls previous year.

In response to a question, Tirunagari said that there were no formal directives on whom to vote for in the Telangana Assembly elections of 2023. The local leadership was allowed to decide which course of action to take, taking into account the circumstances that existed in each of their districts.

“Appointing a president to the Telangana unit of the party will be decided in Mahanadu (the TDP’s annual conclave),” the leader of the TDP said.
