The TN Chief Secretary asks the Center to ensure that four fishermen from Kuwait be released

Chennai, 22 May In a letter to the Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs, Tamil Nadu Chief Secretary Shiv Das Meena reiterated the state government’s demand for the release of four fishermen from the state who had been detained by the Coast Guard in Kuwait in December of last year.

According to a state government release, Chief Minister M.K. Stalin wrote Prime Minister Narendra Modi on February 9 about the four fishermen from Ramanathapuram who had been arrested on December 5, 2023 by the Kuwait Coast Guard.

Stalin had asked the Center to use diplomatic avenues to gain their release.

The statement said that the request has been reminded by a correspondence that the Chief Secretary has addressed to the Secretary in the Ministry of External Affairs.

Since 2023, M. Karthik (22), J. Sesu (43), M. Chandru (23), and S. Vinodkumar (27), the four fisherman, have been employed as laborers in Kuwait.

A Kuwaiti yacht owner hired them on a contract basis.

After a narcotic material was discovered in the boat the four fishermen were fishing in, authorities detained and took them into jail.
