Three contract instructors scale an overhanging water tank

Today, three female members of “10 Saal Service Puri Kar Chuke Kache Adhyapak Union Punjab” ascended to the top of an overhead waterworks near the major bus terminal, demanding regularization of their services and joining letters as regular teachers. They claim that if they do not get joining letters as regular instructors, they will not descend from the above waterworks.

The female members are Gurjit Kaur from Ludhiana and Sukhjit and Manjit Kaur from Mansa; they are perched over overhead water works. In addition to these three female members, other members have been holding dharnas close to the water works in the districts of Bathinda, Patiala, Mansa, Fazilka, Moga, and Ludhiana in order to have their demands met.

According to Jaspal Singh, the state president of the union, the Punjab government has already regularized the services of 12,700 Kache Adhyapaks (teachers), while the services of around 130 instructors are still pending regularization. He said that after receiving “false assurances” in each of their four meetings with the education minister in recent months, they had accomplished nothing. He said that the little remuneration of Rs 6,000 per month that the “kache adhyapaks” were receiving.

According to him, the Punjab government has implemented a policy of providing regular services to Kache Adhyapaks after they have served for ten years. Teachers who have served for ten years up to June 16, 2023, but who have served for ten years till August 31, 2023, have been issued orders of regular service. He continued, saying that they had been requesting for the previous six months to regularize their services in accordance with the regularization schedule for 12,700 instructors, but to no effect.

Jaspal further said that the teachers in protest would only descend from the top of the overhead waterworks if they received letters of acceptance as regular instructors.
