TN: The Education Department will carry out a survey on “Out of School Children.”

May 13, Chennai Beginning in the last week of May, the Tamil Nadu School Education Department will undertake the “Out of School Children” (OoSC) survey to monitor student locations and evaluate family circumstances.

According to M. K. Muthuvel, president of the Social and Economic Study Center, the study will explain why kids between the ages of six and eighteen aren’t attending school.

“Parents’ financial instability or moving to a different district are the main causes of school dropouts,” Muthuvel said.

According to him, the number of dropouts and unenrolled students might be significantly reduced if these problems are resolved and the government can persuade parents of the value of education.

Block Resource Teacher Educators (BRTE), together with representatives from the Labour Department, will conduct the survey with teachers, headmasters, Anganwadi instructors, social activists, and members of school management committees.

The department is doing research on special children and individuals with varying abilities; therefore, physiotherapists and special educators will also be included in the survey.

Given the large number of migrant laborers from Northeastern and North Indian states in Tamil Nadu, extra attention would be paid to the children of migrant laborers, an Education Department official told IANS.

According to a poll he stated was done in February 2023, 1.3 lakh pupils had dropped out.

A government decree from 2017 said that pupils who miss 30 days in a row of school would be labeled as “dropouts.” Additionally, individuals who exhibit irregularities will be viewed as “potential dropouts,” according to the instruction.

According to the official, a study conducted in 2023 revealed certain schools where a pupil had missed more than thirty days of instruction.

According to him, the agency would take strong measures against schools that have posted fictitious images of the actual conditions faced by students enrolled in such programs.

Due to the involvement of several instructors in both the New India Literacy Program and election duties, the survey scheduled for 2024 was postponed.
