Two cleared of attempted police murder near Sukhna Lake, Chandigarh

Extra Meetings In an attempt-to-murder case, Judge Jaibir Singh cleared two individuals after the prosecution was unable to establish the necessary evidence against them.

On January 12, 2018, when Dileep Singh, also known as Lalli, and Shiva, two residents of Ferozepur, Punjab, reportedly opened fire on a police squad during a gunfight on the backside of Sukhna Lake, next to the CGA Golf Range, a charge was filed against them.

The prosecution claims that two people, purportedly from the Sajjan Mali and Gagan Judge gangs, were straying close to the road dividing Golf Club and Sukhna Lake with the intent to rob a car at gunpoint. Inspector Amanjot Singh led a team of the UT police’s Operation Cell to this information. Additionally, they intended to leave Chandigarh by way of Kishangarh.

According to the prosecution, Inspector Amanjot Singh and his group arrived to the lake’s back end around 4:15 p.m. One of the accused, Dileep, reportedly took out a weapon and opened fire as the police squad attempted to apprehend him. Inspector Amanjot hid to avoid being hurt. The second shot jammed in the pistol’s barrel and was unable to be discharged. With the assistance of additional police officers, Inspector Amanjot Singh defeated the other suspects when they attempted to remove a firearm. The weapons and the two were taken into custody.

According to the allegations, Dileep Singh was found in possession of a.32 bore handgun and four live rounds, while Shiva was found in possession of a country-made weapon and two cartridges.

Following the investigation’s conclusion, charges were brought against the two defendants. Upon establishing a prima facie case, the accused were charged with crimes under the Arms Act’s Sections 25, 27, 54, and 59 as well as the IPC’s Sections 307, 353, and 34. They entered a not guilty plea and requested a trial.

The prosecution has proven the case beyond a reasonable doubt, according to the public prosecutor.

However, the accused’s attorney, AS Chahal, contended that the accused had been wrongly charged in the case. He claimed that the prosecution’s narrative was not supported by any independent witnesses. It was also not shown by the prosecution how the accused arrived behind the lake. Chahal said that there were inconsistencies in the remarks made by police officers as well.

Following the hearing of arguments, the accused was found not guilty of the allegations brought against them by the court. The court noted that the police seemed to have exploited the circumstances in order to forward their goal of engaging the accused in a severe case.
