Unaccounted cash of Rs 40 lakh was found in a city car

Today, the rural police of Ludhiana seized an automobile containing Rs 40 lakh in undeclared cash. The occupants of the automobile abandoned it on the road and ran away from the police while they were being pursued. Subsequently, the money was taken out of the car during inspection.

In a statement, Senior Superintendent of Police (SSP), Ludhiana (rural), Navneet Singh Bains said that, per the instructions of the Election Commission, SI Surinder Singh of the Jagraon City police station was carrying out a routine vehicle inspection at the Tehsil chowk in Jagraon with the assistance of a police team. Surveillance revealed that a Hyundai Verna (registration number PB06AB0081) had been pulled up for inspection. Upon seeing the naka, the three drivers ignored the police’s signal and quickly drove the automobile in the direction of Sidhwan Bet.

According to the SSP, after seeing anything illicit in the vehicle, the police began pursuing the suspects. But after a short while of pursuing, the criminals pulled over the car in the middle of the road and took off.

The perpetrators were able to flee the area despite the police authorities’ best efforts to pursue them.

After inspecting the vehicle, the cops discovered a bag that contained cash. Two DSP-rank authorities arrived at the site after a significant quantity of cash was found in the vehicle, and they tallied the cash, which came to be Rs 40.25 lakh.

According to Bains, the automobile’s passengers were Ferozepur locals who left the scene, leaving the car parked on the road. Since no one appeared to claim the cash when it was seized from the automobile, the Income Tax Department was notified and only I-T authorities would carry out more inquiry, since it was believed to be unaccounted for money.

When questioned whether the money was intended for electoral objectives, the SSP said that although a preliminary investigation was ongoing, it was not possible to determine this for sure.

Concerning transporting cash

Cash may be taken if it is carried without the necessary documentation to show its legitimacy when the poll code is in effect. According to reports, if a person possesses cash less than Rs 50,000, they are not need to carry any documentation, but they must explain why they are carrying the money. If someone is carrying cash between Rs. 50,000 and Rs. 10 lakh, the Election Commission team and the police would not be able to release the money unless there are proof documentation proving the currency’s origins. If someone has more than Rs 10 lakh in cash, neither the EC team nor the police can release it, even if the individual presents documentation. Instead, the matter is sent to the Income Tax Department, and authorities there will only release the money after confirming the documentation.
