Water Cuts Will Affect Mumbai When Lakes Fall Below 10% Capacity

The Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC) is thinking of enacting a water cut in the next few days as the water levels in all seven lakes that are essential to Mumbai’s water supply drop to less than 10%. To prevent an impending water scarcity, locals are being pleaded with by Chief Minister Eknath Shinde to save water.

There are 142,701 million liters of water accessible in the seven lakes: Upper Vaitarna, Modak Sagar, Tansa, Middle Vaitarna, Bhatsa, Vehar, and Tulsi. This represents 9.93 percent of the lakes’ total capacity. After reviewing pre-monsoon preparations, Shinde stressed the need to use water wisely, noting that a water cut may still occur even if the monsoon arrives on schedule.

In contrast, at the same time last year, the lakes had around 15.57 percent of usable water. Still, the existing state of affairs offers a less than ideal condition. The existing water can reportedly meet the city’s demands for the next 25 to 30 days, according to BMC estimates. In addition, Bhatsa and Upper Vaitarna have a reserve of 2.28 lakh million liters of water that may be used in an emergency.
