Weather update: Mumbai and Thane are under a heatwave advisory from IMD

The India Meteorological Department (IMD) has issued a heatwave advisory for Mumbai and Thane for Wednesday, along with the potential for a thunderstorm due to the extreme heat.

According to Sushma Nair, an IMD scientist, Thane and Vikhroli (in Mumbai) had Tuesday highs of 39 degrees Celsius, according to PTI.

According to Nair, there’s also a chance of a thunderstorm on Wednesday afternoon, PTI said.

She said that Mumbai would be hot and muggy and that the heatwave in Thane will last till Thursday, according to PTI.

On Monday, Metro and local train services were disrupted by rain and strong winds that hit sections of Mumbai and the surrounding metropolitan regions.

According to a Metro Rail spokeswoman, high winds caused a banner to fall across the overhead wire, causing metro services between Aarey and Andheri East metro stations to be halted.

Strong gusts caused an overhead equipment pole between the Thane and Mulund stations to bend, affecting suburban services on the Central Railway, according to an official.

The main spokesman for Central Railway announced the suspension of the suburban services on the Main Line.

Although there was some relief from the intense heat thanks to the unusually warm rains, Kalwa in the Thane district and many other places had power disruptions.

In addition, there have also been reports of tree falls in some locations.

In certain areas of south Mumbai, there was drizzle, while in the suburbs of Dadar, Kurla, Mahim, Ghatkopar, Mulund, and Vikhroli, there was rain and wind.

There were also light rains and strong gusts in the satellite towns of Ulhasnagar, Badlapur, Thane, Ambernath, and Kalyan.
