After being approved, work at AIIMS Madurai starts

On Tuesday, the State Environmental Impact Assessment Authority (SEIAA) of Tamil Nadu granted the environmental clearance (EC), so initiating the formal building of the All India Institute of Medical Sciences (AIIMS) in Thoppur village of Madurai. It’s expected that the project will be finished in 33 months.

Key representatives from AIIMS and the construction firm, L&T, were present at a ceremonial ceremony held by the AIIMS director, according to an official statement from Madurai, marking the start of the building project. The project’s first phase, which includes the medical college, dorms, IPD, OPD, emergency block, and other crucial services, is scheduled to be finished in 18 months, while the project as a whole is anticipated to be finished in 33 months.

Executive director of AIIMS Madurai Hanumantha Rao told TNIE that the school intends to relocate its three batches of students, who are now housed at the Medical College Hospital in Ramanathapuram, after a medical college and boy’s and girl’s dorms are built.

2019 saw the laying of the AIIMS Madurai foundation stone in Thoppur by Prime Minister Narendra Modi.Covid-19 and other problems caused the project’s start to be delayed by many years. On March 5, after almost five years, building finally started, but it was quickly put on hold since environmental permission was not received.

Construction of the project will be executed via a comprehensive cooperation, with critical financial support provided by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA). The capacity-building programs JICA is involved in are essential in raising the bar for medical education and healthcare delivery. Specialized training programs for medical and administrative staff are part of this, and they are made possible by collaborations with Japanese healthcare institutions that are highly esteemed.
