Australia legend: India should have fielded R Ashwin in WTC championship game

The starting XI for the current ICC World Test Championship final between India and Australia in London has come under fire repeatedly. The most recent addition to the list is the illustrious Australia captain Steve Waugh, who ‘can’t believe’ Ravichandran Ashwin didn’t make the championship match despite everything he brings to the table.

For the WTC final, India used a four-pronged pace attack with Ravindra Jadeja as the lone specialist spinner. Rohit Sharma may have changed his mind about the playing lineup because of the cloudy weather and grass on the field at The Oval.www.theindiaprint.com australia legend india should have fielded r ashwin in wtc championship game download 2023 06 09t202154.917

In the fifth Ashes Test of 2019, which Australia lost by 145 runs, Tim Paine-led Australia made the same error of bowling first at the location.

“We committed the same error in the Ashes four years ago. The Oval is always challenging, according to Waugh, as reported by AAP.

“It seems green on the surface, but it is brittle and rather dry below. You can get complacent and believe that the cloudy sky and grassy field would take care of everything. When the sun comes out, everything changes completely and dries very rapidly, he said.

Waugh said, “Ashwin isn’t just a quality bowler; he’s also a more than handy batter with five Test centuries to his name.” Ashwin has taken the most wickets for India in the current WTC cycle.

“I do believe that (India) chose the wrong side. This Test match will include significant spin, and it will go up and down, according to Waugh.

I would have chosen Ashwin, leave alone for his bowling, he continued. He has five test centuries, therefore I find it hard to believe he isn’t playing. It is quite odd.

Australia may have lost the toss, but it didn’t matter since centuries from Travis Head and Steve Smith helped them to a respectable 469 all out. After that, its pacers started to hammer India early by cheaply eliminating its top four batsmen.
