Croatian captain Luka Modric played down high hopes for his team after Morocco was held to a goalless draw in their World Cup Group F match on Wednesday, saying they need to take things better one step at a time. Player of the Match Modric said, "Morocco is a tough opponent, difficult to play against them. Today we had a very good defense and didn't let them get close."
As runners-up at the 2018 Russian World Cup, Croatia came to Qatar as one of the favorites, Xinhua reported, but Modric said their first and foremost focus at the moment is the remaining two group matches.
"Before the 2018 World Cup, our ambition was to do well in the group. It is the same now. At the same time, if we pass the group, we will be a dangerous opponent," he added.
Head coach Zlatko Delic also refused to draw comparisons between the team now and four years ago, as it is now a new national team with a lot of new players.
"We are not completely satisfied with today's result. We controlled and dominated the match, but we didn't create enough decisive chances or go forward," Dalik said.
"Morocco was an adversary who appeared compact and well prepared for us," he said. He waited for our mistakes and exploited our weak spots to the best of his ability."
