In penalties, Arsenal defeats treble winners Manchester City to clinch the Community Shield

After tying the score against Pep Guadiola’s team in the dying seconds, Mikel Arteta’s Arsenal upset the triple champions, Manchester City, 4-1 on penalties.

When Cole Palmer fired a left-footed drive from just inside the area in the 77th minute, Manchester City was already up 1-0. Leandro Trossard, though, managed to score Arsenal’s equalizer in the last seconds, deflecting the ball into the goal and sending the match to penalties.

The first penalty kick for City was missed by Kevin De Bruyne, then Aaron Ramsdale stopped Rodri’s attempt before Fabio Vieira scored the game-winning penalty in the traditional Premier League season opener.

Arsenal’s celebrations were far more boisterous than one would expect from a glamour friendly, but their joy highlighted the months of suffering they had undergone since missing a great chance to win their first championship since 2004.

It feels fantastic. Nothing beats winning a title at Wembley against the finest team in the world, according to Arteta.

“We are here to bring this club trophies. It’s wonderful to see so many joyful and proud individuals.

We are disappointed, said Pep Guardiola, the manager of City. We really hope we can win today. Despite being a strong team, Manchester City sometimes loses.

“In the end, we were unable to succeed because their penalty takers were superior to us.”

The Premier League, Champions League, and FA Cup were all won by City in a single season last year, making them just the second English team to do it.

Arsenal lost the eight-point lead they had at the beginning of April and finished five points behind the winners, earning their fifth Premier League championship in six seasons.

Declan Rice, Kai Havertz, and Jurrien Timber, three new acquisitions totaling £160 million, made it plain that Arsenal had something to prove versus City as they sprung into challenges with the type of energy that is often associated with a title-deciding match.

Arteta and his team may have want to remember that the Community Shield winners had just once since 2011 won the Premier League championship as they ran around the field and took in the boisterous celebrations from their supporters.

Arteta acknowledged that Arsenal would require a “unheard of” number of points to defeat the champions, who are vying for a record fourth straight crown, even though they led the table for 248 days of the previous season and still fell short.

Following his £105 million transfer from West Ham, England midfielder Rice put on a polished performance that will have inspired Arteta.

However, Havertz was as wasteful as usual as he squandered Arsenal’s two finest opportunities to take the lead. Timber, another new addition, was also strong at left-back.

Given that Gabriel Jesus will be expected to lead the Arsenal assault while he recovers from knee surgery, Havertz’s debut to his new team was far from ideal.

After joining City from Chelsea, Mateo Kovacic made a strong impression, but fellow Croatian Josko Gvardiol was not there since he had just arrived from Leipzig.

Palmer, who came in for the nondescript Erling Haaland in the second half, scored in the 77th minute.

City quickly raced forward, and after a sloppy turnover by Kieran Tierney, De Bruyne’s header found Palmer, who curled a beautiful finish from the outside of the box into the far corner.

But because of the new time-wasting regulations, there was a ton of stoppage time, and 11 minutes into the extra session, Arsenal grabbed the equalizer.

Trossard cut in from the right and fired a shot directly at Manuel Akanji, but Stefan Ortega was caught off guard as the ball deflected off the City defender and in.

When Vieira converted the go-ahead penalty to ignite the impending championship fight, Arteta once again let his emotions fly. The Spaniard rejoiced as if Arsenal had won the league.
