In the second round of the Australian Open, Ons Jabeur easily defeats Yuliia Starodubtseva

Ons Jabeur defeated Yuliia Starodubtseva, a Ukrainian qualifier, 6-3, 6-1, sweeping into the Australian Open’s second round on Monday.

The Tunisian sixth seed, a three-time Grand Slam runner-up, was not at her best but had too much firepower for her 23-year-old opponent, who was making her debut in the majors.

Having chosen not to participate in warm-up events, Jabeur, who was defeated in Melbourne’s second round the previous year, said that she was anxious for her first match of the year.

“Returning here is really, really special,” she said. “I chose to take a little break before traveling to the Australian Open.

“Hopefully, the next round’s match will be much better because of the support from the crowd today.”

During the game at Margaret Court Arena, Jabeur made 15 wins and 28 unforced mistakes, but he also broke serve six times, which was very important.

The 29-year-old double-failed in her first service game against 150th-ranked Starodubtseva, but she recovered to win the first set with three breaks of her own.

In a one-sided second set that lasted thirty minutes, she produced three more breaks because to her unwavering serve.
