Jemimah and Lanning set the stage for Delhi as their bowlers suppress Mumbai

In a top-of-the-table match in the Women’s Premier League today, the Delhi Capitals defeated the Mumbai Indians by a margin of 29 runs thanks to brilliant fifties from captain Meg Lanning and Jemimah Rodrigues. The two teams got a cold reception in the nation’s capital after the thrilling triumph of the first leg in Bengaluru, with just a small audience showing out to witness the 2023 finals in action.

Lanning scored her third half-century of the season with a 38-ball 53 that included six fours and two sixes. She also established three valuable relationships that, for the most part, supported the DC innings. With eight fours and three sixes in her 33-ball 69, Jemimah delivered the late push, helping Delhi reach 192/4. Alice Capsey (19) and Shafali Verma (28) also made brief appearances.

At the beginning of the Mumbai innings, medium-pacer Marizanne Kapp caused havoc by taking two wickets. However, spinner Jess Jonassen again shown her value with crucial blows as Delhi held the Indians to 163/8. All-rounder Amanjot Kaur (42 off 27 balls) was sent back by Jonassen, who was named Player of the Match in Delhi’s last match. Jonassen had Hayley Matthews (29 off 17 balls) caught at mid-wicket and shattered the stumps.

The runners-up from the previous edition won for the fourth time in a row, extending their lead at the top of the table to two points. Mumbai dropped to third after the crushing loss, while Royal Challengers Bangalore moved up to second place thanks to a higher net run-rate.

Brief scores: Mumbai Indians: 163/8 in 20 overs (Amanjot 42, Matthews 29; Jonassen 3/21, Kapp 2/37); Delhi Capitals: 192/4 in 20 overs (Rodrigues 69*, Lanning 53, Vastrakar 1/20).
