Knee operation 9 times, metal plates inserted into the body, spinal screw loosened in the match, still for 908 wickets
For fast bowlers, it is said that half the time of his career is spent in treating and recovering from injuries. Then once injured, it is no less a challenge to maintain the first bully on the cricket field. There was an England bowler who got injured several times in his career. Had to undergo several back and knee operations. This bowler had nine knee operations. Steel plates were put in his feet so that he could walk. Due to these plates, the metal detector of the airport once rang. Due to this, he was stopped. Nevertheless, whenever the bowler landed on the field, he played with full fervor. But left cricket at the age of 31 due to continuous injury. The name of this cricketer is Neil Foster. He was born on 6 May in Essex, England.
Neil Foster was called as Foji on the cricket field. He started playing for Essex in county cricket. His bowling action was beautiful and lifted upwards. He used to make the ball outswing. Also, the seam could bowl from both sides. In school, he played both cricket and football. He also gave a football trial for a club. But then adopted cricket. At the age of 18, when he studied in school, he got a contract from Essex County. Three years later, he was selected in the England Test team.
Spinal metal plate was installed
But during this time he suffered a serious injury. In 1981, he started getting stiff in his waist. Investigation revealed that there is a stress fracture at two places in the spinal cord. Because of this, he had to wear plaster for three months. Doctors hoped that maybe it would work, but it did not happen. In such a situation, operation took place in September 1982 and two metal plates of six inches had to be installed. Three months later, when a screw became loose, it had to be removed. But by then he had become fit.
He returned in 1983 and the same year he joined the England team. During the first test match, the second screw of the metal plate placed in the spinal cord also became loose. Because of this, during the match, they had to get water from the back of the spine twice a day. After the match was over, both his plate and the screw had to be removed and he had to rest. Then after recovering, he came back into the team.
The only bowler to dismiss Miandad and Richards on zero
He took 11 wickets in the Madras Test against India in 1984-85 and won England. But after this test, he was dropped from the team. Then during the match against the West Indies, during this period, his knee was also injured and he was operated on nine times. He is the only bowler who dismissed Pakistan's Javed Miandad and West Indies' Vivian Richards for zero runs in Tests. He took 88 wickets in 29 Tests. He took eight wickets for 107 runs, which was his best performance. At the same time, in 48 ODIs, Foster took 59 wickets. But his statistics in first class cricket are astonishing.
