Kylian Mbappe scores five goals as Paris Saint-Germain defeats Toulouse 7-0 in the French Cup

In a 7-0 victory against amateur club Pays de Cassel in the French Cup, Kylian Mbappé scored five goals, including a hat-trick in the first half that lasted 12 minutes, to help Paris Saint-Germain advance to a round-of-16 encounter against arch rival Marseille.

It was his first hat-trick since France's Dec. 18 loss to Argentina in the World Cup final. Mbappé now has 196 goals for PSG, four less than Edinson Cavani's club record. He has scored 25 goals in 24 appearances this season.

On Monday, Mbappe became the first PSG player to record five goals in a contest.

"We came here to show this squad our respect by competing at our best. That's what we did, and we're thrilled about it "said Mbappé. "It was a fantastic chance for them as well as for us since it serves as a reminder that we are products of amateur football and that maintaining this connection is crucial. even if only for that one game."

Although he rested World Cup champion Lionel Messi for the match played at northern side Lens' home stadium, PSG coach Christophe Galtier maintained his promise and selected a strong team that included World Cup top scorer Mbappé and Neymar.

Up until he received a warning in the 26th minute for a hasty late tackle, Neymar remained unnoticed. Galtier was more frustrated with his underperforming squad as Mbappé gave PSG the lead in the 29th minute after a cross from Nuno Mendes, giving PSG a record 14-time cup victory.

Before Mbappé scored with a lob and a deft chipped finish, Neymar scored PSG's second goal with a deft attempt in the 33rd minute to the loud jeers of the fans.

After a mistake by the goalie allowed Mbappé to score his fourth in the 56th minute, Neymar set up Carlos Soler halfway through the second half, and Mbappé finished from close range in the 78th. A late shot was stopped, preventing him from completing a double hat trick.

Since winning the final of its ten French Cups in 1989, Marseille has lost three finals, most recently against PSG in 2016.

Lyon will host Lille in a matchup between two teams from the same division on February 7-8.

On February 14, PSG will host Bayern Munich in the opening leg of their Champions League round of 16 matchup.
