Medvedev defeats Alcaraz and schedules a rematch with Djokovic in the 2023 US Open final

At the USTA Billie Jean King National Tennis Center, Daniil Medvedev defeated reigning champion Carlos Alcaraz with scores of 7-6(3), 6-1, 3-6, 6-3 to reach his third US Open championship match.

I said that I have to play 11 out of 10. I played 12 of the 10 games, with the exception of the third set, Medvedev was questioned by ‘usopen’.

“The only way to defeat Alcaraz is to do that.” He’s so young, has won two Grand Slams, and has held the No. 1 spot for many weeks; it’s really very incredible. I don’t believe anybody has ever accomplished what he has, therefore I was able to defeat him.

The 2021 New York winner, Medvedev, got his calculations exactly right to neutralize the very athletic game of Alcaraz with his own brand of metronomic baseline brilliance in a showdown of two superstars, each with their own distinct set of otherworldly tennis abilities. The third seed also relied heavily on a strong serving effort, which reached its zenith in the second set when he racked up three consecutive love holds.

As Alcaraz exploded out of the gate, Medvedev was holding on at the beginning, fighting through a number of difficult holdings and preventing the opening set’s only two break points. But late in the set, Medvedev claimed 12 consecutive games on service, including two love holdings, and the momentum started to shift.

The third seed clinched the set with two forehand winners in a four-point blitz after a double fault tied the score at 3-3 in the tiebreak.

With an early break in set two, Medvedev emphasized that advantage. From that moment until, he did not drop a service point until he carelessly gave up two when serving out the set.

Set three saw the unavoidable Alcaraz surge, which he announced with a love hold. Alcaraz was already a fan favorite in New York, but when he started to make a comeback attempt, Ashe gave him even more support. The Spaniard was in high gear after converting his first break of the game to take a 3-1 lead, and his balletic maneuvers enabled him to burst past the defenses of the lanky Medvedev.

Turning up the volume, Alcaraz breezed through the third set and created an opportunity at 15-40 in the first few minutes of set four before Mededev started to adjust his defense. In a massive game with seven deuces, Medvedev managed to win that game and then broke the tie on his second break point to go to 4-2.

Alcaraz attacked the net wildly in the latter stages of that arduous game, serving and volleying on the vast majority of the points. Alcaraz was unable to hit the final two volleys because Medvedev continued pressuring him to hit hard shots.

In the end, the Medvedev challenge proved to be too hard to solve. In the last game of the match, it was the third seed’s time to face a grueling service game. However, he held off three break opportunities and won the match with a very thrilling overhead that soared far into the bleachers.

The most recent run of Medvedev’s domination positions him for a rematch with Novak Djokovic in the 2021 final, which Medvedev won in straight sets to prevent the Serbian a Grand Slam for the calendar year.

Medvedev is aware that he will need another extraordinary performance to prevent Djokovic from winning a record-tying 24th major singles championship.
