On Day 2 in Hyderabad, England corrects Joe Root’s error after Yashasvi Jaiswal is out for 80

On the first day of the first Test match between England and India in Hyderabad, the English committed a number of tactical mistakes, one of them being the failure to give the ball to Joe Root, their lone off-spinner. With his rendition of Bazball, dubbed “Jaisball” on social media, Yashasvi Jaiswal gave England’s spinners a taste of their own medicine on Thursday, severely undermining them.

On Day 2, however, England quickly corrected their error when Ben Stokes introduced Joe Root to begin the bowling. In the opening over of the series, Yashasvi Jaiswal attempted to exert pressure on Root by skipping down the track and hitting a ball over the bowler’s head. The ball had enough legs, even if the timing was off, to give Jaiswal a boundary.

To the dismay of the large Hyderabad crowd that had turned out on Republic Day, star batsman Joe Root took the big wicket of the India opener in the first over of the day, just when it appeared that Yashasvi Jaiswal would treat Root with contempt, like he did with the rest of the England spinners. After Yashasvi Jaiswal chipped the third delivery of the over back to Joe Root, who perfectly timed his leap to take a deft reflex catch, Jaiswal was out for eighty.

Notably, before play began on Day 2, former England captain Kevin Pietersen made a daring prediction, suggesting that Joe Root may be the player to put an end to Yashasvi Jaiswal’s destruction on Day 2, underscoring England’s error in not starting him on Day 1. With Jack Leach and two unskilled spinners, England was expected to depend heavily on Root.

“I’ll tell him that he needs to start again tomorrow. Kevin Pietersen told the broadcasters on Friday, “He can’t think he is 76 not out and walk out to bat this morning and the same stuff can happen because he may get one to turn very early and knock his stumps off and then he will absolutely kicking himself.”

For the youthful opener, who seemed certain to reach his second Test hundred in only his fifth Test, it was a great letdown. As he was on Thursday, Jaiswal’s intentions were evident, but he was let down by the shot he chose early in the game.

KL With newfound confidence, England bowled when Rahul entered the game at No. 4 to partner with Shubman Gill. Along with Tom Hartley, who was sent to the cleaners on Thursday, Joe Root kept bowling.

Notably, on Day 1, India’s skipper Rohit Sharma also lost his wicket for playing a careless chip in Jack Leach’s delivery. After India had scored more than 80 runs in the 13th over, Rohit was removed for 24 off 27.
