Stan Wawrinka is praised by Novak Djokovic for “Old Guys Fighting With Young Guns” Progress after Wimbledon in 2023

The All England Championships defending champion Novak Djokovic advanced to the Round of 16 after defeating Stan Wawrinka in a thrilling third-round match. By defeating his Swiss rival 6-3, 6-1, 7-6, the Serbian moved one step closer to defending his championship.

The 36-year-old, who had just achieved his 351st grand slam victory, offered a few words of respect for the Swiss legend.

Djokovic added, “I have to say it’s remarkable what Stan is accomplishing even at his age after several operations.

What is the issue? I believe it’s vital to realize that we’re two older players competing against younger players, said the 23-time grand slam winner as the audience laughed.

The Serbian’s second match at the AELTC pits him against Polish great Hubert Hurkacz, 26.

Djokovic, a seven-time Wimbledon winner, is going for his eighth championship at the All England Lawn Tennis and Croquet Club and hopes to catch Swiss superstar Roger Federer.

The Serbian surpassed longtime adversary Rafael Nadal, who has won 22 major titles, for the most grand slams by winning his 23rd major title at Roland Garros last month.

The 36-year-old defeated Pedro Cachin in the first round of his SW19 campaign. The challenger, an Argentine, was easily defeated by the holder 6-3, 6-3, 7-6.

Hordan Thompson of Australia was Djokovic’s opponent in the second round, but the 36-year-old Serb handled the challenge with ease and defeated the Australian star with scores of 6-3, 7-6, and 7-5.

Other results from the day included first seed Carlos Alcaraz defeating Alexandre Muller 6-3, 7-6, 6-3.

The second-round match, which was postponed halfway due to rain at the All-England Club, saw Greek sensation Stefanos Tsitsipas upset British hope Andy Murray. The 24-year-old put a lot of effort into defeating the two-time Wimbledon champion in five sets, 6-7, 7-6, 4-6, 7-6, 6-4.

Iga Swiatek, the top-ranked woman’s player, progressed with a decisive 6-2, 7-5 victory over Petra Martic to set up a Round of 16 match against Belinda Bencic. Swiatek is attempting to win the famous Venus Rosewater dish for the first time in her career.
