“Today Was the Day We Had to Maximize”: Shreyas Iyer of KKR receives praise for his dominant performance against SRH in Qualifier 1

In Qualifier 1 of the playoffs, held at the Narendra Modi Stadium on Tuesday, the Kolkata Knight Riders, headed by Shreyas Iyer, decisively defeated Sunrisers Hyderabad by eight wickets, securing their position in the Indian Premier League 2024 finals.

When facing the Pat Cummins-led SRH bowling attack, the KKR captain was in fine form with the bat, leading the team home with a 24-ball 58. During the post-match presentation, he talked and shared his first feelings after the victory.

Shreyas expressed her happiness with the performances, saying, “We stood for each other and were elated by the performance.”

Given that the Kansas City Royals had not played since May 11th, there were worries over potential rustiness. But with all the traveling they undertake throughout the season, the captain thinks the prolonged rest is essential.

“Rejuvenation was crucial to us. It’s crucial to live in the moment when you travel so much, he said.

He gave the squad credit for pulling together once again and delivering a strong showing all around. Additionally, he gave the bowlers credit for their consistent ability to take wickets and prevent any potential retaliation from SRH.

“We had to maximize today, and we did, and that’s what we thrive on,” he said. It was crucial, in my opinion, how each bowler rose to the situation and entered the game to take wickets.

“Every bowler’s mindset and strategy was to take wickets, and they succeeded in doing so,” he said. It’s captivating to see a bowling lineup with variation.

According to Shreyas, the team’s dedication to putting in the hard work has allowed them to be in such a commanding position that they just need to complete one more step to win the championship.

“They have been true in their work ethics; hopefully, we keep performing,” he said. Gurbaz made a significant start in his first game. It was imperative that we maintain the same run rate going forward.

When questioned about his relationship with fellow Iyer Venkatesh during the second innings, he said that the two communicated with each other in a separate language: Venkatesh spoke to him in Tamil, while Shreyas answered in Hindi.

“Though I don’t speak Tamil, I can comprehend. I answer Venky in Hindi while she talks in Tamil. In the end, we have to make sure we give it our all and be in our zone,” he said.
