What is the head-to-head record between Australia and Afghanistan in World Cup match 39 of 2023? Now, who will prevail?

If Australia wins their match against Afghanistan on Tuesday at Mumbai’s Wankhede Stadium, they’ll advance to the semi-finals. With 10 points, Australia is ranked third in the tournament points table. If they were to achieve 12 points, fourth-place New Zealand would not be able to catch up to them.

Afghanistan, on the other hand, might make a significant advancement in their excellent World Cup campaign by moving up into the top four. Afghanistan is currently in sixth position with eight points from seven games; however, a win would move them up to fourth place with a two-point advantage over New Zealand, with one more game remaining for both teams. Afghanistan has a reputation for being a tough T20 team, but they also proved in this competition that they are a strong ODI team. The team captained by Hashmatullah Shahidi defeated England, the reigning champions, and went on to win the tournament against Pakistan, Sri Lanka, and the Netherlands.

Glenn Maxwell and Mitchell Marsh’s comeback will benefit Australia. Due to a personal flight to Perth, Marsh was unable to attend their last encounter versus England. He had a brief bat in his first training session since returning to India, and he bowled for around thirty minutes. Maxwell had sustained a bizarre concussion in an accident at a golf course, which prevented him from playing in that game. He trained in Mumbai’s nets as well.

Steve Smith, the vice captain, is not without doubt. The 35-year-old, who has had vertigo many times in the last few years, reported to reporters on Monday that he seemed to be having a return of the condition. After spending more than an hour on Monday dealing with throwdowns and net bowlers, Smith was said to seem ill. After landing on his hands and knees, the former captain of Australia sat with his head in his hands, laid on the outfield behind the nets, and ultimately left the area with the team physiotherapist.

Before the game even began, an Afghanistan all-rounder made headlines by criticising Australia for losing a three-match ODI series in the United Arab Emirates in late March and for refusing to play a bilateral series against the Afghans due to the Taliban’s restrictions on women’s and girls’ employment and education.

Australia against Afghanistan: One-on-one ODI match

Two of the three ODI matches between the two sides have taken place during World Cup competitions. When Australia and Afghanistan played their first one-off ODI in the UAE in August 2012, the latter team was still a long way from becoming a full member of the ICC. Inexperienced as they were, they were just 66 runs away from defeating Australia. Overall, Australia has a 3-0 head-to-head advantage.

Australia vs. Afghanistan: World Cup matchup

In 2015, Australia took against Afghanistan in a World Cup match held in Perth. That match was won by the team captained by Michael Clarke by 275 runs, and they went on to win the tournament. The 2019 World Cup saw them defeat Afghanistan in Bristol by seven wickets.

Just 45 runs separate David Warner from being the third hitter in the history of international cricket to score more than 18,000 in all forms while serving as an opener. Chris Gayle and Sanath Jayasuriya are the only two people who have accomplished that feat.
