13-Year-Old Dies in Basti After Gangrape; Family Blames BJP Leader; Minor One of 3 Arrested in Uttar Pradesh

On Monday, June 5, a 13-year-old girl was found dead in Uttar Pradesh’s Basti district after reportedly being the victim of a gang rape by three people, one of whom was a child. One of the defendants, according to the victim’s relatives, is a BJP politician. The BJP district president for Basti, however, said that the alleged offender had been expelled from the party’s Kisan Morcha in 2021 for engaging in “anti-party” activities.

Police detained the accused, a 14-year-old, along with the other two suspects, who were 23 and 24 years old. According to a senior police official, shock-related “antemortem injury” was the cause of death in the post-mortem assessment.

The accused kidnapped the daughter while she was returning home after leaving the house to purchase vegetables, according to the girl’s father. She was raped by the defendant, who then abandoned her lifeless corpse when she passed away from her wounds.

“The accused picked up my daughter as she was walking home from the store, brought her to an abandoned school, and then sexually assaulted her there. They departed after leaving her corpse in a remote location after she passed away, the father said.

The mother of the child said that one of the suspects had phoned to let them know that their daughter was laying dead close to the school.

The girl’s father said, according to a story in the Indian Express, “the police are not taking action against one of the accused because he is a BJP leader.”

“One of the accused is a BJP politician, and local officers are often seen with him, thus the police are not taking anything against him. He is receiving favoritism from the cops. According to the victim’s father, “He is the Mandal vice-president for the BJP’s Kisan Morcha unit for our region.

A day after the occurrence, a First Information Report (FIR) was filed under IPC Section 302 (murder), and throughout the course of the inquiry, Sections for gang rape and the Protection of Children from Sexual Offenses Act (POCSO) were added to the FIR.

Gopal Krishna Choudhary, the chief of police in Basti, said that the first defendant was taken into custody in less than four hours. Choudhary said that strict action will be taken against the three suspects, noting that they were all detained within 36 hours of each other.

In a related incidence, a guy is accused of raping a 15-year-old girl last week in the Sehramau neighborhood of Uttar Pradesh’s Pilibhit district. The girl’s mother reportedly reported to the police that a man had taken her daughter against her will to a mango grove and sexually assaulted her, according to a PTI report. Kant Kumar Sharma, the station house officer at the Sehramau police station, confirmed this information.
