The wrestlers’ problem has damaged India’s reputation abroad: Akhilesh

The leader of the Samajwadi Party, Akhilesh Yadav, claims that the governing BJP’s flagrant disdain for female wrestlers has seriously damaged the nation’s reputation.

He said that this was a blatant sign of the party’s feudal mentality and a stain on the international reputation of democratic India.

“News reports of exploitation, harassment, and the forcible stifling of dissenting voices are being publicised at the worldwide level, which is harming India’s reputation in the eyes of the international community. The BJP essentially promotes a feudal mentality in which neither women nor the average person are appreciated. He said on Thursday that the BJP has disgraced democracy.

Following their eviction from the protest location in New Delhi, the women wrestlers proceeded to throw away their Olympic medals into the Ganga and began a hunger strike, according to press sources cited by Akhilesh.

Akhilesh, the opposition leader in the state Assembly, had before criticised the BJP for how it handled accusations of sexual harassment made by female wrestlers against departing Wrestling Federation of India (WFI) president Brij Bhushan Sharan Singh, a BJP member of parliament.

The wrestlers had filed a police report and requested a FIR via the Supreme Court. They were now calling for the detention of the BJP MP who had maintained his innocence over and again.

“On the one hand, the BJP talks about ‘Beti Padao, Beti Bachao’ when elections are just around the corner, and when these girls speak out against harassment and exploitation, the government treats them like this,” Akhilesh added.
