Adityanath has embarked on a drive to eradicate symbols of historical subordination in Uttar Pradesh after taking office in 2017. The state’s other districts, including as Aligarh, Azamgarh, Shahjahanpur, Ghaziabad, Firozabad, Farrukhabad, and Moradabad, are also being considered for renaming in addition to Akbarpur. A number of state-wide highways, parks, crosswalks, and buildings have been renamed in honor of the late prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee as part of this initiative.

The legacy of Atal: A revolutionary force in Lucknow
The impact of former prime minister Atal Bihari Vajpayee is evident in Lucknow, the capital of Uttar Pradesh. His influence may be seen all the way from Atal Bihari Vajpayee Road to Atal Chauraha, and from the Atal Bihari Vajpayee Conference Centre to Atal Setu and beyond to Atal Bihari Kalyan Mandap. Furthermore, the renaming of the old Mughalsarai railway station to Deen Dayal Upadhyay Junction brought about a huge transition, as it now stands as the fourth busiest junction in the nation.

UP’s historic restoration and rebranding campaign
In an effort to restore the city’s historical identity, the state administration renamed Allahabad to Prayagraj just before to the 2019 Kumbh Mela. Saints claim that this ancient place was originally called Prayagraj, which the Mughals changed to ‘Allahabad’. At the same time, the Jhansi railway station was renamed after Rani Lakshmi Bai, and Faizabad was renamed Ayodhya.

It was recently recommended that Firozabad be renamed Chandra Nagar, while the municipal authorities of Aligarh approved a motion calling for the city to be renamed Harigarh. A desire to rename the district as Mayapuri was made in Mainpuri, where a similar request was also made.

Changes to the district name that are being proposed
Gulab Devi, the Minister of State for Secondary Education, has insisted that Prithviraj Nagar or Kalki Nagar be used in place of Sambhal, the name of her hometown. Devmani Dwivedi, a former BJP MLA, proposed renaming the Sultanpur district as Kushbhawanpur. Kush, son of Lord Rama, laid the foundation for this city. Brajesh Singh, a BJP MLA from Saharanpur’s Deoband assembly constituency, has also called for the name Deoband to be changed to Devvrind.

Deoband is most known for the Islamic institution Darul Uloom, while there are rumors that the location was formerly called Devvrind in Hindu scriptures. In a similar vein, Ghazipur’s former BJP MLA from the Mohammadabad constituency, Alka Rai, has called for the city to be renamed Gadhipuri.
