Delhi’s Well-known Vada Pav Woman Breaks Down, Says MCD Told Her to Close Her Cart

Chandrika Gera Dixit, the well-known “Vada Pav girl” of Delhi, became well-known for her ability to serve delicious Vada Pav, a street food staple from Maharashtra that consists of a deep-fried potato dumpling tucked within a bread bun that has been cut nearly midway through, all the while radiating a cheery grin and vibe. But in a recent widely shared video, Dixit broke down in a dramatically contrasting situation, clearly heartbroken.

Dixit bemoaned over the phone, breaking down in tears, “Bohot pareshan kar rahe hai…police wale…MCD wale.” She said that authorities from the Municipal Corporation of Delhi (MCD) had harassed her nonstop, threatening to close her pushcart and making extortionate demands for money. Dixit said that they only operate for financial benefit, despite the fact that their actual motivation is still unknown. Dixit cited a recent payment of “around Rs. 30,000–Rs. 35,000” as evidence. “Sab paison ka khel hai,” she repeated, her sorrow palpable.

She then conversed with patrons, explaining her situation before allegedly phoning her brother to get her assistance as MCD personnel persisted in their threats.

She asked people whether she was in the wrong, looking for reinforcement. Many defended her and said that it’s okay to make a living.

Many culinary bloggers came together to show sympathy for Dixit and her business.

Many people shared their thoughts and sympathies, with others suggesting Dixit ask the MCD for permission in order to stop receiving abuse. “The regulations set out by the MD are what matter, not men or women. These food stands are essentially an invasion of government property. Furthermore, if these food stands are permitted, why do other businesses need to own commercial space and get the necessary permissions from the government? A number of permits are needed, and obtaining these licenses comes at an excessive cost. So naturally, why should we let these booths in?” a user said.

“Take the license and do it officially; no one will come and bother you,” was another suggestion.

According to reports, Sainik Vihar in the National Capital Region is home to Dixit’s Vada Pav stand.
