What the Letters A/F on a Car’s License Plate Mean

There are always new automobiles being launched to the Indian automotive industry. Automakers provide new, updated versions of their well-known automobile models at competitive costs, which is what makes them so popular with the general public. Typically, during the festival season, there is a sharp increase in the purchasing of automobiles. This is mostly due to the volume of offers made by businesses during this time. The Motor Vehicle Act of 1989 requires that a new car be registered when it is purchased.

Driving an unregistered car is prohibited by law, and if caught, a significant punishment may be assessed. Another issue with new cars is that the number plate is inscribed with A/F instead of a number. Let’s examine what A/F signifies now.

A temporary registration is issued by the corporation whenever a car leaves the showroom since it is not yet registered. This is done so that the location would be known precisely to the traffic police throughout the inquiry. Normally, temporary registration numbers are assigned to automobiles; however, if the temporary registration number cannot be located, A/F is printed on the number plate.

A/F stands for “Applied For,” which denotes that the car’s owner has requested a new number. It implies that A/F may be inscribed on the number until registration is complete and the vehicle receives its permanent number. The legal validity of A/F is limited to one week, and if a vehicle continues to use it beyond that time, the vehicle is deemed to be in violation of the law. Today, the situation has improved since the number plates are already there in the showrooms and are installed right away when the automobile is delivered.

In addition, some of the cars have a distinctive arrow mark on them. The vehicle’s arrow markings imply that it belonged to a soldier, and this is done primarily so that it may be recognized as a distinct object. BH is sometimes inscribed on the license plate of certain automobiles. This indicates that the automobile is an Indian possession, thus if it is sold to a different state, the number will not need to be changed.
