India’s Coal Production Increases By 8.5% To 223 MT From April to June: Coal Ministry

In the April to June 2023–24 quarter compared to the same time in the previous year, India produced 223.36 million tonnes more coal, according to an official statement released on Friday.

The Ministry of Coal reported that during the same time period in FY 2022–23, coal output was 205.76 million tonnes (MT).

Between April and June 2023, Coal India Limited (CIL) recorded 175.48 MT of output, representing a noteworthy growth rate of 9.85% compared to 159.75 MT during the same period of the previous year.

The remainder entered from other captive mines.

It’s crucial to note that although coal imports rose by 16.76% in April–May 2023 compared to the same period the year before, this gain is mostly due to the sharp reduction in coal import prices, the ministry noted.

In the first quarter of FY24, coal import prices have fallen by more than 60% compared to the same time last year.

The country had a sufficient amount of coal on hand, according to the ministry, which was 107.15 MT at the end of June 23 (67 MT with coal companies, 33.61 MT with thermal power plants, and 6.54 MT at private washeries/good shed siding/ports), up 37.62% from the same time last year.

India’s success in coal output is a result of the industry’s combined efforts and dedication to supplying the country’s expanding energy demands, it said.

For the fiscal year 2023–2024, India has a production goal of 1,012 MT of coal.
