The Indian market for dietary supplements is expected to reach $18 million in 2025

According to specialists in the field of natural biopolymers, the demand for nutraceutical goods has grown recently, resulting in a phenomenal compound annual growth of 20% over the previous three years.

This trend is being driven by rising public health consciousness and a focus on preventative healthcare.

The experts spoke at a workshop sponsored by the ICAR-Central Marine Fisheries Research Institute (CMFRI) as part of the SSR Policy at the institute. Projections show that the Indian nutraceutical market will grow from an estimated $4 billion to an impressive $18 billion by the end of 2025.

They said that the rising demand for nutraceutical goods is proof that untapped natural resources must be used.

Dr. A. Gopalakrishnan, director of CMFRI, emphasised the urgent need to investigate marine species in order to discover new bioactive chemicals that might solve unmet medical requirements and advance the frontiers of healthcare.

“The public has responded overwhelmingly to CMFRI’s nutraceutical products made from seaweeds to cure numerous lifestyle disorders including diabetes, obesity, arthritis, hypertension, and thyroid. The institute will keep looking into these sea species’ potential medical applications, he said.

He also emphasised the need for work to be done in order to fully realise the enormous potential of natural resources like marine creatures for the creation of novel pharmaceuticals.

The goal of the workshop was to disseminate the most recent knowledge and methods for isolating, analysing, and creating natural biopolymers with therapeutic uses.

Dr. Kajal Chakraborty, the principal scientist, said that the creation of value-added goods from marine creatures like seaweeds not only enhances customers’ health but also opens up chances for the downstream value chain.

Proteins, polysaccharides, and nucleic acids are examples of natural biopolymers that have considerable potential for the medical industry, she noted.
