What is SpaceFiber, which Reliance Jio introduced at the India Mobile Congress?

JioSpaceFiber, which Reliance Jio claims to be India’s first satellite-based gigabit internet service, was introduced on Friday. On the first day of the three-day India Mobile Congress (IMC) in Delhi, Prime Minister Narendra Modi was shown a demonstration of JioSpaceFiber by Reliance Jio’s Chairperson, Akash Abmani.

“With gigabit access to online government, education, health, and entertainment services, Jio SpaceFiber will enable everyone, everywhere, to fully participate in the new digital society,” Ambani said at the event.

Ambani went on to say that JioSpaceFiber will “expand our reach to cover the millions yet to be connected.”

Jio SpaceFiber: What is it?

1.) It is a satellite-based internet network, as the name implies; the firm aims to provide high-speed broadband services to previously unreachable places with it. It is a supplement to Jio’s current services, Jio AirFiber and Jio Fiber.

2.) Reliance Jio collaborated on the ambitious initiative with SES, a satellite communication company with headquarters in Luxembourg. For this, it will make use of the new O3b mPower satellites as well as the latter’s O3b satellites.

3. By using these satellites, Reliance will use the most recent advancements in medium earth orbit (MEO) technology to “bolster” mobile backhaul capacity, therefore increasing Jio’s True5G network’s scalability and reach, even in rural places.

As reported by Economic Times, Jio Satellites, a division of Reliance Jio, was granted permission by the Department of Telecommunications (DoT) to begin high-speed internet services from space in September 2022.

(5.) Meanwhile, Jio SpaceFiber is already accessible in four of the most isolated places in India: ONGC-Jorhat (Assam), Gir (Gujarat), Korba (Chhattisgarh), and Nabarangpur (Odisha). It will soon be offered at very low costs throughout the nation.
