Will Smart Energy Meters Lower Your Electricity Bills?

On July 24, 2023, the GMR Smart Electricity Distribution Company received a Rs 7,593 crore smart meter order for 22 districts in Uttar Pradesh as part of the Revamped Distribution Sector Scheme (RDSS) of the federal government, which is conducting the smart metering project.

Varanasi, Prayagraj, Agra, Mathura, and Aligarh are just a few of the 22 districts where 75.69 lakh prepaid smart meters will be installed.

By 2025–2026, the RDSS initiative will have installed 250 million smart prepayment meters throughout the country. Customers should be able to efficiently monitor and control their power usage costs thanks to the smart meters. Additionally, it attempts to streamline the systems for billing and revenue collection at electricity distribution firms (discoms) to increase their operational efficiency.

India’s “Smart Meters” and electricity costs

India has more than 5.5 million smart meters deployed as of May 2023, the majority of which were in postpaid mode. However, the government intends to switch all meters to smart prepaid mode by 2025–2026 under the RDS program. The prepaid approach will increase the effectiveness of revenue collection for discoms since customers must pay before using the service, preventing non-payment and the building up of arrears. Customers are also given the ability to manage their energy use based on their demands and available resources thanks to the prepaid capability.

RK Singh, the Union Power Minister, advised energy users to switch to smart prepaid meters in a statement on March 20, 2023, saying that they might help lower power bills by up to 2 to 2.5 percent. By allowing customers to prepay their bills, the installation of smart meters would also reduce the operational and financial expenses for power providers, according to the minister.

Additionally, using smart meters will result in the power distribution system being more automated, digital, and efficient. It will facilitate energy accounting and make it easier to spot problem areas.

In a poll conducted by the Council on Energy, Environment, and Water (CEEW) and published in March 2023, 50% of consumers said that after installing smart meters, the frequency of their bills decreased. Over 4,500 individuals from Assam, Bihar, Haryana, Madhya Pradesh, Rajasthan, and Uttar Pradesh participated in the poll, which also included 1,200 prepaid and 1,500 postpaid metered families. Up to 38% of respondents said their power expenses have decreased. According to the research, 38% of prepaid subscribers recharge more than once each month, with UP having the highest percentage (38%). Customers may manage their prepaid bill expenditures using prepaid bills depending on the consumption from the previous month. However, it continues to take money out of their budget before being used.

Other Advantages

Smart meters provide more advantages in addition to lowering power costs. Customers of smart meters get bills once per month, which is a huge improvement over those who, in places like Rajasthan, only get invoices every two months. In contrast to traditional meters, where the date relies on when meter readers visit the location to take manual readings, the bill production occurs remotely and automatically on a set day each month. With the aid of this tool, monthly expenditures may be budgeted well, preventing jarring cutbacks to the household spending.

According to the poll, two-thirds of smart meter users perceive bill payment to be simpler as a result of the practicality of digital payment methods and smart meter applications. About 37% of customers said that smart meters had reduced energy theft in their area, 38% claimed that their electricity costs had decreased, and 41% claimed that the quality of the power supply had improved.
