An Update Regarding DC’s Green Lantern Show, From James Gunn

James Gunn, co-CEO of DC Studios with Peter Safran, shared his thoughts on the original Green Lantern TV series that was in development prior to DC Studios’ establishment. In answer to a DC fan’s comment on Threads, Gunn recently made it clear that the Green Lantern program in question is not the one being created for the DCU. He said that the version of the program that Finn Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine were meant to feature in is no longer happening.

As far as Gunn was concerned, Hollywood’s business tactics had more to do with the show’s demise than any malice against the creatives working on it.

“Although it happened before my time, I didn’t realize it was in the DCEU. Having said that, I believe Finn is a gifted man and he will succeed! Every day, projects for actors, directors, and writers fall through. He went on to add that they had all gone through it several times and that it wasn’t “done dirty,” but rather an essential aspect of the job.

Whereas the previous version was meant to showcase fan favorites Guy Gardner and Alan Scott, the new Lanterns will focus on the two most popular Green Lanterns, John Stewart and Hal Jordan.

When the series was announced, James Gunn told ComicBook.com that the next project was a big-budget HBO television series called Lanterns, which told the story of Hal Jordan and Jon Stewart, two Green Lanterns.

He went on to clarify that this is a terrestrial TV program that is a lot like True Detective, even though there are a few different lanterns strewn around. In it, a few Green Lanterns watch over Precinct Earth as space police officers, and they discover a horrifying secret that is linked to the main narrative of the DCU.

It goes without saying that Guy Gardner (Nathan Fillion), who plays Superman in the 2025 film, will be among the other lanterns that get “peppered in there.”

In the first Green Lantern series, Wittrock and Jeremy Irvine played characters like Guy Gardner in the 1970s and Alan Scott in the 1940s. The story would span many decades.
