Chris Hemsworth finds the criticism of Marvel films by Martin Scorsese and Francis Ford Coppola bothersome: “It seemed severe.”

Hollywood actor Chris Hemsworth claims that big-name directors like Francis Ford Coppola and Martin Scorsese’s critique of Marvel superhero films comes out as “harsh” and “eye-rolling.” When Scorsese called the superhero movies “theme park experiences” and “not cinema” in 2019, it garnered attention. Later, Coppola took it a step further and referred to superhero films as “despicable.”.

Hemsworth, who is best known for portraying the beloved superhero Thor in many Marvel Cinematic Universe (MCU) films, said that the breadth of the two directors’ filmographies has made him a fan of both of them. “It bothered me and seemed cruel, particularly coming from heroes. I found it amusing that people were criticizing the superhero genre. We’ve all had failed films, just like those people. I thought it would be wonderful to share their discussion about the problems with superheroes with the billions of people that watch them. “Were they all wrong?” the Australian actor asked The Times of London, a UK news publication.

Hemsworth disputed Scorsese’s claim that superhero flicks negatively affected independent and mid-budget theaters. “Social media and cellphones, not superheroes, are to blame for the shift in moviegoing. During that shift, superhero movies really kept people in theaters, and now they’re drawing new audiences. Thus, they need to be given a little more gratitude,” he said.

Hemsworth also responded to celebrities who made appearances in the MCU criticizing superhero flicks. While he refrained from mentioning specific individuals, it seemed that his remarks were directed against Christian Bale, his co-star in Thor: Love and Thunder, who had previously expressed dissatisfaction about performing in front of a green screen as “monotony”. Idris Elba, Hemsworth’s other co-star, has previously said that making a Marvel movie was “torture”.

“It’s like, ‘These are popular movies; cast me in one. Oh, yours didn’t function? I’ll beat them up. I mean, I was raised on soap operas. Additionally, it used to annoy me when performers spoke about the show afterwards in a shameful or guilty manner. Being humble has many benefits. ‘We don’t get paid to make the good lines sound nice, but to make the poor ones work,’ said one elderly actor from Home and Away. That remained with me,” he said.

Hemsworth, who has portrayed Thor in eight MCU films, said he would want to do something new if he were to reprise the role of the superhero. “I would want to know how we might alter it once again if I were to return to Thor. However, being a superhero comes with a disadvantage in that you become stereotyped. I felt somewhat limited in what I could do, therefore I yearned for something to terrify the very daylights out of me. He made reference to his next film Furiosa: A Mad Max Saga when he remarked, “And Furiosa did.” In May, the George Miller-directed movie will be shown in theaters all around the globe.
