A dairy-allergic Italian woman passes away a few days after consuming “vegan” tiramisu

A “vegan” tiramisu that an Italian lady who had a severe dairy allergy consumed died a few days later. The New York Post reports that 20-year-old Anna Bellisario, who passed away last year, had supper with her boyfriend at Milan, Italy’s Flower Burger, a plant-based restaurant. She consumed “Tiramisun Mascherpa” there. Before eating the dessert, the fashion student read the label and even inquired for more details. She only took a few spoonfuls, however, and 10 days later in Milan’s San Raffaele Hospital, she passed away from anaphylactic shock.

The lady began coughing and having respiratory difficulties after eating the meal, according to The Post. She even tried forcing herself to throw up, taking the cortisone and asthma medicine she had with her, but ultimately succumbed to anaphylactic shock. Before passing away on February 5, 2023, she remained unconscious for ten days. Tests subsequently showed that the dessert killed her because it included mascarpone, a creamy milk-based Italian cream cheese.

“The quantity of caseins found in the product in question indicates that mascarpone was present in the preparation as an ingredient and not as a simple contaminant,” the prosecutors in Milan said to The Sun.

As to the source, there is a current investigation underway about manslaughter against the pastry firm that provided pre-made tiramisu to Flower Burger and sixty-three other eateries. Furthermore, the Italian Ministry of Health issued an order to recall the “vegan” tiramisu after the event due to suspicions that it contained milk.

Products under the Tirimisun brand that include tiramisu have traces of milk and milk protein, while the mayonnaise on the sandwich Bellisario ordered for her meal has traces of eggs. According to the Post, Tirimisun may have “mixed up” the manufacturing lines for its vegan pastries and sweets that include milk.

The event was described as “a worrying picture of unscrupulousness” by Judge Fiammetta Modica.

Interestingly, the term “dairy allergy” describes a disease in which you develop an allergy to dairy products. That implies that when you eat dairy products, your body starts to ‘fight’ these foreign radicals because it perceives them as a danger to the body.

A dairy allergy may cause a variety of symptoms in certain people when they consume dairy products. Among the most typical symptoms are headaches, rashes, vomiting, diarrhea, nausea, coughing, and mouth itching.
