As a result of the highest rainfall since 1884, Hong Kong may be closed

Hong Kong, which was recently impacted by a monster typhoon, might see more delays due to heavy rain from another storm.

According to a statement from the administration, schools will be closed on Friday because of the severe weather, which is expected to linger until at least midday. Employers were urged to prioritize employee safety and provide flexible work schedules. Major bus companies in the city stopped running their buses because of security issues.

until 11:05 p.m. local time, the observatory issued the highest “black” rainfall warning, which was still in effect until 5:57 a.m. Typhoon Haikui’s leftovers are to blame for the rain.

The observatory said that between Thursday night at 11 p.m. and Friday morning, there was a total of 158.1 mm (6 inches) of rain, which was a record high since 1884. Social media users saw video of some streets turning into rivers and torrential water flowing down the escalators of a metro station underneath. It was unable to instantly confirm the footage.

According to MTR Corp., flooding close to Wong Tai Sin station caused the suspension of a portion of the Kwun Tong Line. Both KMB and Citybus announced the suspension of its bus services, with Citybus adding that it would first evaluate the weather and road conditions before starting up again.

Additionally, the stock market may be closed for at least a portion of the day. If the black rainstorm warning is still in effect at 7 a.m., morning trading will be postponed in accordance with local stock exchange regulations. If the alert is still elevated by 9 a.m., the stock market’s morning session will be canceled.

More than 70 mm of rain had fallen in an hour and more rain is expected, according to a dark rainstorm warning. The city of Hong Kong is susceptible to floods and landslides from heavy rain that generally falls during the summer months because of the terrain of the island, which has highways and structures carved into steep slopes.

According to the observatory, more than 600 mm of rain fell in various locations on eastern Hong Kong island throughout the course of the previous day. There is also a landslide warning in effect.

After bringing destructive winds, Saola departs from Hong Kong.

Due to Super Typhoon Saola, the city was closed on Friday and Saturday last week. Trees were felled and roads were obstructed by the storm, which was the strongest to batter the city since Mangkhut in 2018. The observatory only issued its highest storm warning six times in the previous forty years.

The storms are the most recent evidence of the extraordinary weather this summer has brought to the planet. Numerous fatalities were caused by floods from a typhoon in northern China, including Beijing, in late July and early August.
