Bangladesh train tragedy results in 15 deaths and multiple injuries

Authorities in Bangladesh report that a passenger train and a cargo train collided on Monday, causing at least 15 deaths and several injuries. The catastrophe occurred around 4:15 p.m. when a passenger train traveling from Kishoreganj to Dhaka collided with a freight train.

Thirteen bodies have so far been found, according to a Bangladeshi TV station report that quoted a policeman at the Bhairab Railway Station.

Numerous people, according to the news source, were pinned under the wrecked carriages.

Dhaka Railway Police Superintendent Anowar Hossain said, “An early report said that the goods train crashed into the Egaro Sindhur from behind, striking two of the carriages.”

The disaster occurred near Bhairab, some 80 kilometers (50 miles) from the capital Dhaka, when a passenger train and a cargo train collided.

According to local police spokesperson Sirajul Islam, while rescue attempts go on, more people may die.

Officials said that when a cargo train and a passenger train traveling in the other way collided in the eastern city of Bhairab, two passenger carriages were derailed.

The town of Bhairab is located around 60 kilometers (38 miles) northeast of the capital Dhaka. Government administrator Sadiqur Rahman is said to have said, “We have recovered 15 bodies, many are injured,” in several news reports.

Rescuers said they could still make out crushed and trapped individuals under the trains. The death toll will increase, according to Rahman.

At least 100 injuries, he said, had occurred.

When two trains arrived at the same track at about 4:00 pm (1000 GMT), the accident, according to Rahman, occurred.

Train accidents are common in Bangladesh and typically happen as a consequence of poor signaling, negligence, old tracks, or other crumbling infrastructure.
