Meeting of the UN Security Council to Discuss Afghanistan’s Problems

Kabul: According to Khaama Press, the UN Security Council will convene today (Monday) to discuss Afghanistan.

This is the UN Security Council’s first meeting on Afghanistan after its Doha summit, which was chaired by UN Secretary-General Antonio Guterres.

According to TOLO News, it is also anticipated that the planned UN ambassador for Afghanistan would be considered at the UNSC meeting.
The announcement from the UN states that this meeting will take place behind closed doors.

Important Discussion Points
According to the sources, the UN Security Council will talk about the Doha summit’s conclusions and the designation of an Afghanistan special representative at the meeting.

According to Khaama Press, Antonio Guterres convened the conference in Doha on February 18 and 19.

The designation of a special representative
Notably, a major area of contention between the UN, the Taliban, and some regional nations is the designation of a UN special envoy to handle the Afghanistan situation.

Furthermore, the admission of a new Afghanistan representative has been contingent upon the approval of the Taliban by China, Russia, and Iran.

Taliban Is Against Designating A Special Representative
But according to Khaama Press, the Taliban have openly rejected the designation of a special envoy in their pronouncements.

Following the second meeting in Doha, the UN Secretary-General said that discussions on the appointment of a new UN envoy will start right away.

A significant step in resolving the current crisis in the area has been taken, and the UN’s appointment of a special envoy for Afghanistan further demonstrates the international community’s commitment to a peaceful conclusion.
