Nikki Haley, an Indian-American presidential contender, wins her first primary contest against Donald Trump in Washington, DC

Nikki Haley, an Indian-American running for president, defeated competitor Donald Trump in the Republican nomination battle in Washington, DC, giving her campaign a boost ahead of the pivotal Super Tuesday match.

Haley, 51, garnered 1,274 votes (62.9%) as opposed to her chief opponent and former president Trump’s 676 votes (33.2%).

Haley will get every Republican delegate that was up for grabs in Washington, DC, giving her a total of 43 delegates throughout the country—a far cry from Trump’s 247.

The competition was held over the weekend at a downtown hotel a short distance from the center of Washington, DC’s lobbying district.

By doing this, Haley has broken ground as the first female Republican presidential primary winner in history. Additionally, she is the first American of Indian descent to win a primary in either the Democratic or Republican parties.

The three other Indian Americans who ran for president in the past, Vivek Ramaswamy in 2024, Kamala Harris in 2020, and Bobby Jindal in 2016, had not even won a primary.

Haley, the former US ambassador to the UN, passed away in her native South Carolina. However, she is the first female Republican primary winner in US history.

The former governor of South Carolina emerged victorious after her crushing defeat by Trump on Saturday at a Republican convention in Michigan, as well as in the caucuses in Missouri and Idaho.

Olivia Perez-Cubas, a national spokeswoman for Haley’s campaign, said, “It’s not surprising that Republicans closest to Washington dysfunction are rejecting Donald Trump and all his chaos.”

The Trump team, however, claimed that Haley was being named “Queen of the Swamp” based on the findings.

Press secretary for the Trump campaign Karoline Leavitt said, “Tonight’s results in Washington, DC, reaffirm the object of President Trump’s campaign — he will drain the swamp and put America first.”

“While the rest of America has resoundingly rejected Nikki, she has just been anointed Queen of the Swamp by lobbyists and DC insiders who want to uphold the broken status quo. Their queen has been claimed by the swamp, she said.

Leavitt said, “Trump will fight for every American who is devastated by Joe Biden’s failures and being let down by these very DC insiders.”

In the November 5 election, 77-year-old Trump is expected to run against 81-year-old Democratic incumbent US President Joe Biden.

With a commanding lead in all previous early nomination contests, Trump is expected to accumulate additional delegates on Super Tuesday, which falls on March 5.

For weeks now, Haley has vowed to continue running until Super Tuesday, when nomination processes will take place in 15 states as well as American Samoa.

After the early contests, voters from many states cast votes in primaries scheduled to take place on the same day, a significant new phase of the presidential primary process is known as “Super Tuesday.”

Tuesday’s primaries might be Haley’s last chance to mount a ridiculous and ineffective campaign against Trump for the Republican presidential nominee.

Even though it was Haley’s first time winning, it was not a huge surprise. Many in Washington thought that the District offered Clinton the greatest, and maybe the only, opportunity to win a primary.

With only 22,000 registered Republicans in the nation’s capital, Trump’s influence among them has never quite matched his power across the nation.

CNN noted that while Trump ran unopposed in the 2020 primary, he came in third in the 2016 election cycle.
