Putin encourages Russian automakers to imitate PM Modi’s “Make in India” initiative

The Make in India project of Prime Minister Narendra Modi has received plaudits from Russian President Vladimir Putin, who said that India had set an example via its efforts to encourage domestic manufacturing. Speaking on Russian-made automobiles at the 8th Eastern Economic Forum, President Putin urged Russia to follow in the footsteps of its allies and used Prime Minister Modi’s Make-in-India program as an example.

“You know, back then, we didn’t have locally produced vehicles, but we have today. They indeed seem little in contrast to the Mercedes and Audi vehicles we purchased in large quantities throughout the 1990s. However, this is not a problem.

“I believe we need to model ourselves after some of our allies, like India. They are concentrated on producing and using automobiles built in India. By boosting the Make-in-India initiative, I believe Prime Minister Modi is doing appropriately, Putin said.

The Russian President pushed citizens to use more and more domestically produced automobiles, claiming that doing so would not violate any WTO commitments.

We must drive the cars that were built in Russia; this is just great. Absolutely no violations of our WTO duties will result from this. It will deal with government acquisitions. at order for officials to utilize locally produced vehicles, we need to establish a set of rules governing which vehicles they may drive. This was said by Putin at Vladivostok.

“You are presumably aware of the plans to keep purchasing these autos. Because of the reduced logistics, it would be simple to execute, he said.

To promote manufacturing in the nation, Prime Minister Modi introduced the Make-in-India program on September 25, 2014, during his first term.

In India, manufacturing has expanded dramatically across a number of industries. As of 2022, foreign direct investment had doubled, and in the eight years before to that, the exports of the defense industry increased by a factor of ten.
