The Reason This Man’s Body Generates Alcohol on Its Own

Belgium: Alcohol is used by people to feel drunk, but what if the body makes the chemical itself? Indeed, a guy detained in a drunk driving case in Belgium was found not to have been charged because he had auto-brewery syndrome (ABS), a unique medical ailment. The man’s employment at a brewery is another coincidental detail that adds intrigue to his tale. Anse Ghesquiere had three separate medical exams by the authorities to confirm his ABS diagnosis.

The judge said at the hearing that Ghesquiere showed no symptoms of drunkenness when the car was pulled over.

Dr. Manish K. Tomar, a hepatologist and gastroenterology specialist at Yatharth Hospital, describes Gut Fermentation Syndrome (GFS), sometimes called Auto-Brewery Syndrome, as a rare illness in which a person’s gastrointestinal system creates ethanol.
