Two Maoists Arrested in Wayanad After Gunfight with Kerala Police’s Special Units

Following a gunfight in a nearby woodland late on Tuesday night, two Maoists—a man and a woman—were taken into custody, according to police sources. According to the reports, on Wednesday, a confrontation between Maoists and specialized squads of Kerala Police occurred in the Periya region within the Thalappuzha police station boundary.

The event happened when five Maoists, or so it was said, went to a residence to get some rest and recharge their cell phones.

Three gang members were able to flee the site during the operation, according to the sources.

According to the sources, the arrested Maoists have been brought to a neighboring police camp to be questioned.

Teams from the Kerala Police initiated a search and rescue operation in the region, after information provided by a Maoist sympathiser who was arrested in the nearby Kozhikode district earlier in the day.

The Maoists opened fire on the state police’s top commando units, the Thunderbolt Squad and the Special Operation Group (SOG), during the operation.
