Rwanda Bill by Rishi Sunak is back in the Commons

After several delays and legislative roadblocks, British Prime Minister Rishi Sunak’s signature bill to fly undocumented migrants to Rwanda is set to return to the House of Commons on Monday in the hopes of becoming law. The House of Lords amended the Safety of Rwanda Bill and returned it to the Commons, starting what is known as legislative ping-pong between the two houses of parliament. This procedure brings the bill back to the Lower House.

In an effort to prevent legal objections to refugees being transported to Rwanda while their asylum applications are being processed, the peers want to soften the strict legislation that tries to declare the East African nation safe under the law.

It continues voting as Parliament reconvenes after the Easter break and new arguments about the Bill are heard against the background of small boat asylum seekers crossing the English Channel, which reached a record daily high for 2024 on Sunday at 534. It will be seen as another setback for Sunak.
