Who are the contenders for the US presidential election in 2024?

While President Joe Biden is essentially the Democratic Party’s nominee, two Republican contenders are vying to be their party’s presidential nominee in the general election in 2024. Numerous contenders from third parties have also entered the race.

The candidates are listed here.
Donald Trump
With a 64% approval rating in the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll and wins in the first two states to nominate candidates, Trump has become the clear favorite among Republicans by taking advantage of his civil cases and four separate indictments in criminal cases—unprecedented for a former US president—to increase his popularity and raise money.Additionally, he is ready to guarantee Nevada’s delegates.
The Justice Department has refuted Trump’s claim that the charges are a political witch hunt intended to obstruct his bid for a second four-year term. Trump, 77, has made this claim. In addition, a legal challenge against his ability to vote in the wake of the assault on the US Capitol on January 6, 2021, has made its way all the way to the US Supreme Court. In the event that he is re-elected, Trump has promised to get retribution on those he believes to be his adversaries and has been using more and more authoritarian rhetoric, such as claiming he would only rule “on day one.” Other radical reforms that he has pledged to implement include abolishing birthright citizenship, mass deportations, and stricter immigration laws. He has also threatened to dismantle the federal civil service and replace it with loyalists. In addition, he has pledged to repeal Obamacare’s health insurance program and tighten trade restrictions with China.
NIKKI HALEY
Haley, 52, a former governor of South Carolina and Trump’s envoy to the UN, has highlighted her relative youth in comparison to Biden, 81, and Trump, as well as her Indian immigrant parents.
She had established herself as a reliable conservative in the Republican Party, more trustworthy than many of her contemporaries when it came to handling racial and gender problems.
However, Trump has been going after her more and more, making racialized remarks about her race and spreading false rumors about her South Carolina birthplace disqualifying her from the White House. In the wake of New Hampshire’s election on January 23, Haley—who received 19% of the vote among Republicans according to the Reuters/Ipsos poll—has intensified her criticism of Trump and collected $1 million after the latter threatened her donors. In addition, she has positioned herself as a staunch supporter of US interests overseas, pointing out Trump’s admiration for autocrats, and intensified her claim that Trump is too unstable, elderly, and polarizing to be useful. In her home state, where opinion surveys indicate she is behind Trump, she has said she would continue to compete beyond the primary on February 24.
PARTY DEMOCRATIC
Joe Biden Amidst worries about his age and low support ratings, Biden—who is already the oldest U.S. president ever—will need to persuade voters that he has the endurance for a another four years in office. Allies of Biden assert that he thinks he is the only Democratic contender capable of defeating Trump; nevertheless, according to the most recent Reuters/Ipsos poll, Biden received 34% of the vote while Trump received 40%. In declaring his campaign, Biden mentioned the fatal assault on the US Capitol by Trump supporters on January 6, 2021, and said that it was his duty to protect American democracy. He has Kamala Harris as his running companion once again. His reelection campaign will take the economy into account. Inflation reached 40-year highs in 2022, and voters are feeling the pinch as the cost of necessities rises, even if the United States avoided the predicted recession and is expanding more quickly than predicted.
In addition to spearheading the Western nations’ reaction to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine, Biden also supported Israel in its fight against Hamas terrorists in Gaza and convinced allies to impose sanctions on Moscow.
But he’s come under increasing fire from some in his own party for not supporting calls for a ceasefire in the Palestinian territory, where over 27,500 people, according to health officials, have died, thousands of buildings have been damaged or destroyed, and the people are living in shortages of food, water, and medical supplies. He has pushed through significant infrastructure investment plans and economic stimulus packages at home to increase industrial production in the United States, but voters have not given him much credit for the latter. Republicans and Democrats alike have attacked Biden’s handling of immigration policy, even as the number of people crossing the border between the United States and Mexico reached all-time highs during his presidency. In the Democratic Party’s presidential primary, Biden won handily in New Hampshire thanks to a write-in campaign; in January, he was left off the ballot owing to disagreements about the schedule, and in February, he won resoundingly in South Carolina.
DAEAN PHILLIPS
Little-known Minnesota congressman Phillips said in October that he would launch a long-shot challenge against Biden on the grounds that he doesn’t think the president can win reelection. In a one-minute internet video, the 55-year-old wealthy businessman and co-founder of the gelato firm declared his candidacy, stating: “We’ve had some obstacles…. We are determined to rebuild both America and this economy.”
Only 2% of the vote was cast for Phillips in South Carolina, where he was unable to get any delegates. However, he fared better in New Hampshire, finishing second with a 20% vote.
Individuals
Jr., Robert F. Kennedy
Kennedy, a 70-year-old anti-vaccine crusader, first challenged Biden for the Democratic candidacy and is now running as an independent, although he is behind badly in the polls. In the presidential contest, where third-party candidates have influenced the results of American elections even when they have not won, some recent Reuters/Ipsos surveys suggest that Kennedy might hurt Biden more than Trump. In the most recent Reuters/Ipsos survey, Trump maintained a six-point lead over Biden even after voters were given the chance to cast ballots for third-party candidates like Kennedy, who received 8% of the vote. Senator Robert F. Kennedy, who was slain in 1968 while running for president himself, is the father of Kennedy. Kennedy was temporarily removed from Instagram for disseminating false material on the COVID-19 pandemic and vaccines.
His attempt to have YouTube owner Google to remove footage of him raising doubts about the efficacy of COVID vaccinations was unsuccessful.
WEST CORNEL
The philosopher, professor, and political activist said in June that he will run as a third-party candidate for president, a move that is expected to appeal to progressive and Democratic supporters.
In October, West, then 70, declared his candidacy as an independent after stating that voters “want good policies over partisan politics” in his first campaign as a Green Party candidate. He has pledged to provide housing security and eradicate poverty.
STEIN JILL
On November 9, physician Jill Stein renewed her campaign for the Green Party in 2016. She said that Democrats have repeatedly broken their pledges “for working people, youth, and the climate – while Republicans don’t even make such promises in the first place.”
Following Trump’s unexpected victory in 2016, Stein, then 73, collected millions of dollars for recounts. Only one Wisconsin electoral review—which concluded that Trump had won—was prompted by her accusations.
