COP28 begins in Dubai with a plan to leak methane; PM Modi departs at 6 p.m. | Updates

Leading global figures, including Prime Minister Narendra Modi, are scheduled to attend the COP28 Summit, the annual United Nations climate change summit, in Dubai, United Arab Emirates, on Thursday. At 6:00 p.m., the prime minister will depart for Dubai. The dates of the summit are November 30 to December 12.

Delegates from around 200 nations will be present at the summit, which is being hosted by conference host and OPEC member the UAE. They will be there to support the idea of a low-carbon future that embraces fossil fuels rather than rejects them.

The conference will also cover international differences on how to successfully tackle emissions of methane and global warming, particularly in view of China’s recent pledge to include this powerful greenhouse gas into its climate goals for 2035.

The United Nations Framework Convention on Climate Change (UNFCCC), which was founded in 1992, has COP as its main decision-making body.
Major oil and gas corporations are likely to make a commitment to decrease methane leaks. The UAE is hosting this year’s climate negotiations (COP28).

A “blue zone” with sessions for UN-accredited participants and a “green zone” with activities and exhibitions for registered members of the public and civil society will comprise the COP28 summit.
Weeks have passed since a UN study claimed that greenhouse gas levels in the atmosphere reached a record high in 2022.
US Vice President Kamala Harris is traveling to Dubai as part of the team to the annual UN climate change summit.
