Key Takeaways from the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021–2022

The All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) 2021–22, which was issued earlier this week by the Ministry of Education, revealed that the overall number of students enrolled in higher education increased to roughly 4.33 crore in 2021–22 from 4.14 crore in the previous session. The study also revealed that, from 2.01 crore in 2020–21 to 2.07 crore in 2021–22, the total number of female enrolments has grown.

According to the research, the number of women enrolled in PhD programs increased from 0.48 lakh in 2014–15 to 0.99 lakh in 2021–2022. In 2021–22, the number of ST students enrolled rose to 27.1 lakh from 16.41 lakh in 2014–15, representing a 65.2% rise. The study states that this growth in enrollment occurred for both ST students and non-ST students.

Here are some of the survey’s highlights:

ENTRANCE PUPIL
The overall number of students enrolled in higher education grew from 4.14 crore in 2020–21 to roughly 4.33 crore in 2021–22. Enrollment has increased by around 91 lakh from 3.42 crore (26.5%) in 2014–15.

From 2.01 crore in 2020–21 to 2.07 crore in 2021–22, the number of female enrolled has grown. The number of enrolled females has increased by around 50 lakh from 1.57 crore (32%) in 2014–15.

The number of SC students enrolled in 2021–2022 is 66.23 lakh, up 44% from 46.07 lakh in 2014–15.

The number of SC female students enrolled grew from 29.01 lakh in 2020–21 and 21.02 lakh in 2014–15 to 31.71 lakh in 2021–22.

Between 2014 and 2015, there has been a 51% rise.

The number of ST students enrolled rose by 65.2% from 16.41 lakh in 2014–15 to 27.1 lakh in 2021–2022.

The number of ST female students enrolled grew from 12.21 lakh in 2020–21 and 7.47 lakh in 2014–15 to 13.46 lakh in 2021–22. A notable eighty percent growth has occurred between 2014 and 2015.

Additionally, from 1.13 crore in 2014–15 to 1.63 crore in 2021–22, OBC student enrollment has doubled. Enrollment of OBC students has increased significantly by around 50.8 lakh (45%) between 2014 and 2015.

The number of OBC female students enrolled grew from 52.36 lakh in 2014–15 to 78.19 lakh in 2021–2022. The total number of OBC female students enrolled has increased by 49.3% between 2014 and 2015.

The number of minority students enrolled rose by 38% from 21.8 lakh in 2014–15 to 30.1 lakh in 2021–2022. The number of enrolled female minority students grew by 42.3% from 10.7 lakh in 2014–15 to 15.2 lakh in 2021–2022.

In the Northeast states, there are 12.02 lakh students enrolled overall in 2021–2022, up from 9.36 lakh in 2014–2015. In the Northeast states, there are 6.07 lakh more female students enrolled in 2021–22 than male students enrolled, who total 5.95 lakh.

GER grew from 23.7 in 2014–15 to 28.4 in 2021–22 (based on 2011 demographic predictions for the 18–23 age group). The female GER climbed from 22.9 in 2014–15 to 28.5 in 2021–2022.

SC students’ GER climbed from 18.9 in 2014–15 to 25.9 in 2021–22, while the GER of female SC students increased from 18.1 in 2014–15 to 26 in 2021–22.

ST students’ GER grew from 13.5 in 2014–15 to 21.2 in 2021–2022. The GER for female ST students increased even more dramatically, from 12.2 in 2014–15 to 20.9 in 2021–2022.

According to the Gender Parity Index (GPI) for 2021–2022, the ratio of female to male GER is 1.01. Since 2017–18, the GPI has been over 1, meaning that for the sixth year in a row, female GER has exceeded male GER.

According to responses from AISHE 2021–22, 12.1% of students are enrolled in postgraduate studies, while 78.9% of all students are engaged in undergraduate courses.

In AISHE 2021–22, the most students are enrolled in the arts discipline (34.2%), which is followed by science (14.8%), commerce (13.3%), and engineering and technology (11.8%).

The majority of postgraduate students in AISHE 2021–22 are enrolled in the Social Science stream (21.1%), followed by Science (14.7%).

Enrollment in Ph.D. programs climbed from 1.17 lakh in 2014–15 to 2.12 lakh in 2021–22, an 81.2% rise.

Enrollment in Ph.D. programs for women has quadrupled, from 0.48 lakh in 2014–15 to 0.99 lakh in 2021–2022. The yearly growth in female Ph.D. enrollment from 2014–15 to 2021–22 is 10.4%.

Out of all students enrolled in UG, PG, Ph.D., and M.Phil. programs in 2021–2022, 57.2 lakh are in the Science Stream, with more female students (29.8 lakh) than male students (27.4 lakh).

Private universities make up 26.3% of all enrolments, while government universities, which make up 58.6% of all universities, provide 73.7%.

In 2021–22, there were 98.5 lakh students enrolled in STEM at the UG, PG, M.Phil, and Ph.D. levels, up from 94.7 lakh in 2020–21.

Compared to 95.4 lakh in 2020–21, the total number of passouts grew to 1.07 crore in 2021–22.

Amount of establishments
There are 1,168 universities and university-level institutions registered overall, 45,473 colleges, and 12,002 freestanding institutes.

Between 2014 and 2015, 341 universities and university-level institutions were founded.

There are 4,470 colleges that are entirely for women, and there are 17 universities (14 of which are state public universities).

INACCURATE DATA
In 2021–2022, there were 15.98 lakh faculty members, or instructors, of whom about 56.6% were men and 43.4% were women.

The number of female faculty members and professors grew by 22% from 5.69 lakh in 2014–15 to 6.94 lakh in 2021–22.

The number of female faculty members per 100 male faculty members increased slightly from 75 in 2020–21 to 77 in 2021–22.

Since 2011, all higher education institutions in the Indian Territory that provide higher education to the nation are included in the All India Survey on Higher Education (AISHE) conducted by the Ministry of Education.

The survey gathers comprehensive data on several aspects, including student enrollment, instructor data, infrastructure data, financial data, and so on.
